KCAU-TV - Channel 9 - Interview Part 1 (of a two-part story) "Children in Crisis" - focuses on the Thunker Family (NE)
KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa, did a story on "children in crisis" - the problems of accessing mental/behavioral health services for children that was only revealed publicly after Nebraska's Safe Haven allowed for 36 older children to be relinquished by desperate families unable to find adequate help any other way. This first segment of a two-part story focuses most on the challenges experience by the Thunker family of Hartington, Nebraska. News Anchor Jenna Rehnstrom has done a wonderful job covering important issues affecting families raising children with mental and behavioral health issues!
Julie, It's great to know
Julie,
It's great to know that the KCAU segments and this site can help you share your story with others. One thing we all need when we are struggling alone with these issues is to meet others who know a lot of what you are talking about, because we have also experienced many of those same situations. I do hope you continue to share more of your own story and build up your confidence to help others demand important changes in this system. The most important people for a child is FAMILY. Supporting a child's needs WHILE SUPPORTING THE FAMILY is critical for giving a child the best chance for a healthy future.
It's good to have you here! ~ Melanie
i am so proud of the Thunker
i am so proud of the Thunker family for going on television and talking about his son. I have a son that has behavior problems and is 14 years old and their are days I want to walk way, but I know that is not the answer. I went through a time when my son was in a school system and they knew their was help out their, but didn't inform me of it until my son was going to have a felony charge on him at the age of 12 years old. My son is in a different school system know but he has to live with a mistake he made that could of been prevented if I only knew that their was extra help for kids with behavior problems. Julie You are your sons best
Julie
You are your sons best advocate, don't let anyone try to insinuate otherwise. Good luck.
